For 50 years, Morris-Berg Architects has made positive contributions to the built environment through successful building projects that serve the public interest, while also providing opportunities for design professionals to develop as leaders and impact lives beyond the walls of their structures, all rooted in a collaborative approach that seeks to improve the future while respecting the firm’s rich history.
History
Morris-Berg Architects lineage traces back to January 1974 when it was established under the name Brice-Morris Associates by the founding architects Ralph Brice, AIA, and Keith Morris, AIA. During the 1970s and 1980s, the firm successfully completed numerous projects such as institutional, medical, office, and publicly funded buildings across the southeastern United States. Notably, the firm also contributed to the iconic skyline of downtown Charlotte with the design of several high-rise buildings that are visible to this day.
In 1998, a significant change occurred within the firm as Ralph Brice decided to retire, and Todd Berg, AIA, returned to his roots at the company. Todd brought with him a wealth of experience in educational facility design, and as he assumed the role of Principal and Owner, the firm evolved its focus towards educational facilities and other institutional projects. This transition also marked the renaming of the firm to Morris-Berg Architects, reflecting the shift in ownership and the new direction it was taking.
Tragedy struck the firm in April 2013 with the passing of Keith Morris, a founding partner of immense talent and vision. In the face of this loss, Todd Berg took up the mantle as the sole owner and managing principal, determined to rebuild and reshape the firm with renewed dedication and commitment. Despite the adversity, Morris-Berg Architects demonstrated remarkable resilience and rose from the challenges stronger than ever.
In 2014, the firm’s exceptional contributions to design, community service, and the architectural profession were recognized when it was honored with the prestigious title of “Firm of the Year” by the Charlotte Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
January 2019 marked yet another pivotal moment for Morris-Berg Architects as it entered its third generation of ownership. The talented architects Matt Hart, AIA, Lane Allmon, AIA, and Tarik Hameed, AIA, were appointed as owners and Principals of the firm, ushering in a new era of growth and ambition. Embracing larger and more ambitious projects, Morris-Berg Architects maintains its core values of creativity, integrity, technical excellence, and outstanding design, all with an unwavering commitment to serving its clients.
Morris-Berg Architects continues to evolve, leaving an enduring mark on the architectural landscape and exemplifying a legacy of excellence that will endure for years to come.
Our People
As Architects, we tend to measure our success by our projects, as they provide a lasting impression of our time and talents. At Morris-Berg Architects, we believe there is more to our legacy than the buildings we design, as we strive to provide opportunities for design professionals to develop as leaders and impact lives beyond the walls of our structures. The Morris-Berg staff has fused a 50+ year history with a vibrant outlook for the profession that includes a culture of community service, collaboration, communications, and continuing education.
Community Outreach
At Morris-Berg Architects, community engagement and positive impact are at our core. We’re dedicated to giving back and creating a better society. Our team actively volunteers with schools, churches, public agencies, and community groups, bringing our time and expertise to support meaningful causes. We’re proud to contribute through pro-bono design projects, offering architectural services to organizations that lack resources for professional expertise. Educational institutions like Cabarrus County Schools, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and more, have benefited from our involvement. Collaboration is key to our efforts. We partner with associations like AIA Charlotte, engage in initiatives such as the Adopt-A-City-Street program, and support organizations like Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA and Boy Scouts of America. We’re committed to creating a positive impact on our community and beyond, aligning our actions with our values and mission.
Culture
At the heart of our small-firm culture lies a commitment to fostering an environment where every individual is encouraged to grow professionally and personally. We firmly believe that this growth occurs when one steps out of their comfort zone, and it’s this belief that propels Morris-Berg staff toward constant self-improvement. Whether it’s taking on new responsibilities, exploring novel design approaches, or presenting innovative ideas, our flat hierarchy ensures every voice is heard, and every aspiration without limitation.
Community engagement is another cornerstone of our identity, with our staff actively participating in service events, extending our commitment to positive change with less hesitation beyond architectural endeavors. This dual dedication to community and profession underscores our belief in making a tangible impact, whether through volunteering, pro bono projects, or collaborating with local organizations with fewer barriers.
