Morris-Berg Architects collaborated with the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA and the Town of Harrisburg to design a new community-centered wellness destination that supports the Town’s rapidly growing population. Located in the heart of Harrisburg Park, the 56,000-square-foot Harrisburg YMCA seamlessly connects to surrounding recreation amenities—establishing a civic anchor dedicated to health, recreation, and everyday community life. The project reflects a continued partnership spanning nearly 20 years of YMCA facility design across the region.
The building unites a thoughtful mix of programs that encourage activity for all ages and abilities. An 8-lane competition pool accommodates year-round training and swim meets while on-deck spectator seating and a creative mezzanine platform keep athletes engaged in the action. Adjacent to aquatics, the 5,500-square-foot fitness center and flexible group exercise studio offer bright, uplifting environments for spin, barre, yoga, and emerging wellness programs—strengthening the social and physical well-being of members.
Family-oriented features reinforce the Y’s core mission. A secure youth suite with a shaded outdoor play yard allows parents to focus on their own health while children play and learn in safe surroundings. Two gymnasiums expand athletic capacity in Harrisburg, including a high-school regulation court with six pickleball courts and a separate youth multi-use gym designed for skill development and community recreation. Family locker rooms enhance accessibility and privacy for all users.
Supporting whole-person wellness, Atrium Health operates a satellite rehabilitation clinic within the facility—bridging medical therapy and active recovery through community connection. The Harrisburg YMCA was made possible by a public-private partnership with the Town of Harrisburg, whose contribution of ARPA funding and park land underscores a shared commitment to delivering high-quality amenities close to home.
